BECKY BLAIR
Becky is a Brighton based painter and has been making and exhibiting artwork for the last 27 years. She studied Fine Art at college in Cheltenham in the early ’90s and from there went straight into making artwork for commercial spaces as well as exhibiting in galleries in the UK and Europe.
After spending much of her 20’s travelling through Asia and Australia and New Zealand, she later evolved her travels to having regular solo shows of her artwork in Australia and taking part in Art Fairs worldwide.
Working mostly in acrylic paints as she finds their versatility perfect for the techniques of layering that allow her to achieve luminous colour as well as the freedom to work quickly. Inspiration comes predominantly from travel.
The colour palette of a country that is foreign to her is hugely exciting and being out of her comfort zone reveals a world that is more vivid and alive. During this time of restrictions, she draws new ideas from her memories of travelling while also finding new sources of inspiration from the beautiful coastline of Sussex and the people she encounters in it.
From Becky:
‘I hope my artwork brings joy, that it lifts people’s spirits and maybe inspires them to be creative. That’s the effect art has on me. When you get to live with original artwork you become aware of how enriching that experience is. To have something in your home that is made by a person trying to capture a slice of magic, is very powerful and important’.
When she isn’t in Australia, Becky lives in Brighton with her husband and daughter. Working out of her studio at the Phoenix, she creates work for galleries throughout the UK and Australia as well as being commissioned by private collectors worldwide.
